OPPORTUNITIES ARE EVERYWHERE

HEALTHY & FUN ACTIVITIES
Special Events

Throughout the year the Y has many events that couldn’t happen without the assistance of volunteers. Events include our Road Races, Boggle Party (literacy fundraiser), Founders Day, Healthy Kids Day, & more.

Each event is unique with fun opportunities to get involved in both the planning and execution.

ROLE MODEL FOR OUR YOUTH
Mentoring, Child Care, Babysitting, Camp and After School Programs

Our most impressionable members can learn so much from you. Work alongside our youth professionals, teaching and caring for the childen in our programs.

MAKE SOMEONE'S DAY
Member Services Team

The perfect position for friendly people who like to build relationships. Work side by side with a staff member at our front desk, greeting members & guests.

Responsibilities include checking in members, phone calls and giving tours to prospective members. Scheduling is flexible, with opportunities available any time that the Y is open.

DEVELOP HEALTHY KIDS
Swim Instruction Assistant

Assist our Swim Lesson Instructors as they work with children of all ages and abilities. While no experience is required, volunteers should be comfortable in the water.

While schedules vary, ideally volunteers should commit to a set schedule for a full session, allowing the students to build relationships with their instructors and assistants.

OPEN UP SOMEONE'S WORLD
Reading Instructor

Make a significant personal impact in the community. After extensive training from our Literacy Coordinator, volunteers are paired with children or adults in need of reading instruction.

This requires a significant commitment, but the personal rewards are tremendous – the experience of seeing someone read for the first time will never be forgotten.

SUPPORT FOR YOUR NEIGHBORS
Fundraising

Since the Y subsidizes those in need, it is a continuous effort to secure funding to support the significant amount of financial aid that is given away each year.

Passionate volunteers are critical to the success of our annual Strong Kids Campaign, which raises money for scholarships, membership, camp, youth programs & more.

THE COMMUNITY HAS A VOICE
Branch Advisory Committee

This volunteer leadership group is a subcommittee of the Northwest CT Y’s Board of Directors, and meets monthly to help set the direction and goals of the branch within the association’s wider strategic plan. Serve as both a representative of the membership & community, as well as a leader in promoting the Y within the community. Volunteers may also work on specific projects and events on behalf of the committee.

Available committees:

  • Torrington Branch Advisory Committee
  • Winsted Branch Advisory Committee
  • Canaan Branch Advisory Committee
  • Winchester Youth Service Bureau Advisory Committee

BEAUTIFY YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Facility Enhancement Team

Great opportunity to work with your hands and see the fruits of your labor immediately. Assist our Facility Manager with improvements and repairs to our historic building.

From landscaping to carpentry, there is always something to be done for someone who takes pride in their work.

AWARENESS OF OUR MISSION
Marketing & Promotions

Help get the word out about the wonderful work that the YMCA does in the community, from our literacy program and homeless shelter to our youth development and healthy living initiatives.

This includes delivering promotional materials to local schools, distributing posters and flyers in the community, and setting up signage for special events.

VOLUNTEERING IS ALSO A GIFT TO YOURSELF

Volunteering with the Northwest CT YMCA is an excellent way to accomplish many things:

  • Give back to your community
  • Make new friends
  • Learn new skills
  • Support an excellent cause
  • Learn more about the Y
  • Network with other members
  • Get your foot in the door for future employment opportunities
  • Make use of hidden skills and talents
  • Be a part of something bigger
  • Just have fun!
